PhD project Comparative peroxisome analyses between higher plants and microalgae with focus on fatty acid metabolism
Animal, plant and microalgal cells are subdivided into compartments. In addition to mitochondria, plastids and the cell nucleus, peroxisomes are essential cell organelles, in which many important metabolic reactions take place such as fatty acid catabolism. Microalgae attract increasing biotechnological interest due to their high biomass productivity including oils and omega-3 fatty acids. These are very important ingredients as fish feed to Norwegian aquaculture. The major objective of his PhD project is to predict and experimental validate the proteome of microalgal peroxisomes and compare it to that of higher plants using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Prediction models are being developed for PTS2 proteins in collaboration with Dr. T. Lingner (University of Goettingen, Germany) and experimentally validated. Nuclear transformation and gene knock-out technology by homologous recombination are being etstablished in the group and shall be applied to optimize metabolic pathway optimization and increase the oil and PUFA levels in microalgae.
