Cloning of Nannochloropsis genes
Position M. Sc.  student
Nationality Nepalese
M. Sc. project Establishment of synthetic biology for the oil-producing microalga Nannochloropsis
Microalgae attract increasing biotechnological interest due to their high biomass productivity including oils and omega-3 fatty acids. These are very important ingredients as fish feed to Norwegian aquaculture. The major objective of this M. Sc. project is to establish synthetic biology tools for the oil-producing microalga Nannochloropsis. Fundamental molecular technology shall established, including exon cloning from genomic DNA, full-length cDNA cloning by RT-PCR, cloning of constitutive and inducible promoters and UTRs, nuclear transformation, cDNA overexpression and gene knock-out technology by homologous recombination. In the long-run, these methods shall be applied to optimize metabolic pathway optimization and increase the oil and PUFA levels in microalgae.
