IER Reference Styles

The Department of Energy Resources has created citation style files for use by students in writing assignments or thesis reports. The citation style follows the AAPG Bulletin style, which in turn follows the Chicago Manual of Style. The files have been updated beyond the default style files provided in citation software because they are not complete.

If you have a reference type that is not included or complete in the style files provided, you will need to refer either to the AAPG Bulletin or the Chicago Style for further information. You should note that the default styles do not always include all of the required information. These style files attempt to rectify this problem.

Furthermore, these style files follow geoscientific journal conventions, which are generally different from other disciplines.

Endnote (38.5 mb): contains style file, official guidelines from AAPG Bulletin, an example Endnote library, and a README file. Zotero (48.7 kb): contains style file, official guidelines from AAPG Bulletin, an example Zotero library, and a README file.

IER Thesis Templates

The Department of Energy Resources has created Word templates for use in submitting the thesis for BSc and MSc, regardless of program. Currently, the University of Stavanger does not have a thesis template or guidelines on formatting, except for a required front page. See the Faculty of Science and Technology guidelines here. However, we encourage students to use the template provided or to use the guidelines we provide on formatting. This helps maintain consistency in appearance and helps you to create a visually pleasing thesis document.

BSc template (100 kb): contains guidelines and template documents. MSc template (102 kb): contains guidelines and template documents.
