ReelWell drilling concept - Investigation of new method for downhole tubular expansion. Theoretical and experimental investigation of a novel method for expanding solid tubulars downhole while drilling. Experimental (primary task): - Build a prototype pipe expander of "roller type" design. - Perform a small series of expansion tests in "Test bench" on tubular samples with various material properties. - Perform pressure-, tension- and additional measurements on the tubular samples. Theoretical (secondary task): - Derive a simple theoretical model for the expansion. - Check the model towards the experimental results. - Discuss well design requirements, and the applicability of the new method. ------------------------------------------------------------ 2. ReelWell - a new drilling concept that eliminates ECD problems and lost circulation. Theoretical investigation of the capabilities for new method for managed pressure drilling, reduce ECD and avoid lost circulation. Safety considerations: - Well control barriers - discussions for the various modes op operation. - Operational procedures and critical items - Emergency situations and back-up procedures. Equipment survey: - Survey of available surface and downhole equipment, pipe in pipe alternatives and its applicability to the new method. - Evaluate specifications to find combination of equipment and hydraulics analysis for optimum drilling system performance. - Contingency and back-up equipment. Well design issues: - Well design requirements - Strong and weak side of new method, related to well design. - Optimum well design with new method. ------------------------------------------------------------ 3. ReelWell Drilling Concept - extended reach capabilities. Theoretical investigation of the capabilities for new method for extended reach drilling. The method is expected to significantly increase the drilling depth and horizontal reach capabilities compared with conventional drilling technology.
