I just thought about two piece of works which may be interesting to be done by the students. 1. Core flooding/ spontaneous imbibition tests trying to document the wettability alteration by seawater. Prepare two groups of SK cores (totally 4) with Swi (e.g. EF brine), 2 with acidic oil (RES40) and 2 with basic oil (Vahall oil). All of them should be flooded at 90 oC. Age them at 90 oC for at least 4 weeks. After aging, displace the oil with n-decane and do the spontaneous imbibition at 90 oC, with SSW-US. After plateau production is reached, do new wettability tests at room temperature. For two cores initially with the same oil, one flood with SSW-US for 2 weeks (about 4 PV), another flood with SSW for 2 weeks (about 4 PV). Then do another new wettability tests, compare with the new wettability index. Flood back with initial brine and n-decane, do spontaneous imbibition tests with SSW-US at 90 oC and compare the oil recovery. 2. Evaluate the effects of initial brine (mainly Ca concentration) on initial wetting conditions of the chalk cores by spontaneous imbibition tests. To use 3 or 4 different initial brines (modified EF brines) with varying Ca (Mg?) concentration, but the same salinity or ionic strength. Prepare two groups of SK cores (totally 6 or 8) with specific initial brine, one group with acidic oil (RES40) and one group with basic oil (Vahall oil). All of them be flooded at room temperature or 90 oC. Age all cores at 90 oC for at least 4 weeks. After aging, do the spontaneous imbibition at 90 oC, with SSW-US, then SSW, SSW*2S, etc. I suppose both of the topics could be either a master diploma work or bachelor work for two students. If we get enough students and our lab capacities are allowed, we can discuss more details afterwards. By the way, I am planning to have one week off (from Monday Oct.17 to Friday Oct. 21) and wish you have a very nice trip to Mexico. Best regards, Peimao
