I was born in Egersund, Norway in 1969. I received my B.Eng. and M.Sc. degrees in 1991 and 1993 respectively, both from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Høgskolesenteret i Rogaland/Rogaland University Center (now Høgskolen i Stavanger/Stavanger College) and my Dr.Ing. (Ph.D.) from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 1997.

My main research interest is image processing with the emphasis on pattern recognition, using multirate signal processing, filter banks, wavelets, transforms and stochastic modelling. Applications include seismic signal analysis, image query by content, document image analysis, and general texture analysis.

I am a member of IEEE, EAGE, SEG, NOBIM and NORSIG. I am the Chairman of NORSIG.

I'm married with Oddveig Obrestad, and together we have two sons, Markus Obrestad Randen, born June 8, 1995 and Haakon Obrestad Randen, born June 9, 1998.
