An acoustic ground sensor system for detection and
classification of military vehicles is currently being
developed at the Norwegian Defence Research
Establishment (NDRE). The system consists of a
number of autonomous microphone units
classifying the received sound in real time. Each
unit is battery operated and transmits messages about
detected vehicles via radio to a central controller.
The sensor units incorporate a commercial digital
signal processor (DSP) for internal signal analysis,
while only high-level information is transferred to
the central unit.
This paper presents the software and hardware
realization of the system.
