The Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) Chirp Fourier Transform (CFT) can be used to simplify the multicarrier transmitters and receivers for cellular radio base stations. The SAW CFT is an analog signal processor that functions as a bank of conventional receivers or transmitters, tuned to a regular grid of frequencies. The CFT has only two filters, but replaces several hundred receivers or transmitters with the conventional mixer and IF filter architecture. The critical SAW components and other hardware have been developed for use on-board communication satellites. The results obtained are described and the feasibility of applying the CFT technology to simplify the base stations are demonstrated.
